The reigning World Series champions, the Texas Rangers, have faced a challenging 2024 season. Instead of building on their championship success, the team has struggled. Following a series loss to the Baltimore Orioles to start the second half, the Rangers’ record stands at 47-52. They trail the AL West leader by five games and are 7.5 games out of the Wild Card race.
Last year, the Rangers made a significant trade, acquiring right-hander Max Scherzer from the New York Mets with the hope of strengthening their rotation. However, Scherzer has battled multiple injuries and had a difficult performance on Saturday against Baltimore.
In his recent outing, Scherzer gave up four runs in just two innings and expressed concerns about arm fatigue during his postgame interview.
Max Scherzer trade raises doubts for the Rangers
Despite Scherzer’s fierce competitiveness, the 39-year-old has struggled with health issues. Saturday’s game marked his sixth start since returning from the injured list, and the signs are not promising.
The Rangers traded top prospect Luisangel Acuña, Ronald Acuña Jr.’s brother, to acquire Scherzer, with the Mets covering a substantial portion of Scherzer’s salary. Yet, with Scherzer’s ongoing health and performance issues, the trade is increasingly looking like a misstep for Texas, a setback they can ill afford as they attempt to salvage their 2024 campaign.
Some may argue that winning the title last year justifies the trade, especially given Texas’ strong farm system. However, Scherzer did not contribute to the championship run, and the farm system has thinned due to recent promotions.
Scherzer, a former Cy Young Award winner, has posted a 1-3 record with a 3.99 ERA in his six starts this year. His inability to stay healthy is a significant issue for the Rangers as they approach the trade deadline. Scherzer was limited during last year’s World Series run and missed much of the first half of this season with arm troubles. His arm fatigue on Saturday adds to the concerns, mirroring past problems.
For the Rangers to turn their season around, they need Scherzer performing at his best, especially given the limited trade options and the team’s ongoing rotation injuries. Fans are anxiously hoping that Luisangel Acuña doesn’t develop into an All-Star, which would further highlight the questionable nature of the trade.
