The Texas Rangers continue their rebuild as they head into Spring Training. This comes in the form of utility-man Brock Holt. It comes in the form of a minor league deal.
Brock Holt return is a homecoming of sorts
This is a bit of a homecoming for Holt. Holt comes from the Ft. Worth area and had attended Rice University. Holt is being brought into the Rangers organization to add to the third base competition for Spring Training.
Holt comes in and faces serious competition from Rougned Odor, Charlie Culberson, Sherten Apostel and top prospect Josh Jung. Like Ben Zobrist, Holt has played every position except catcher over his career. The former top prospect made his debut for the Pittsburgh Pirates as a September call-up in 2012, and never looked back.
He has played 615 games, recording 533 hits with a .270 batting average. In 2014, he landed at eighth in the Rookie of the Year voting. He was named an All Star in 2015. In 2019, he hit three homers, 31 RBIs with a .297 batting average.
He adds to the veteran presence into the club house
He will bring the defensive versatility that the Texas Rangers love, as well as bring another veteran presence into the clubhouse. Assuming he makes the roster, Holt will more than likely slide back into a utility role around mid-season when Josh Jung makes his way to Arlington.
Overall, Holt brings a quality approach and plate discipline to a swing-and-miss heavy lineup, as well as a championship background and another veteran presence to the young Texas Rangers clubhouse.
