During a segment on MLB Network’s Hot Stove, host Matt Vasgersian believes the hottest free agent available and NL Cy Young winner Trevor Bauer would call Globe Life Field home.
Trevor Bauer new team is still a mystery
While the off-season has been slow, Hot Stove hosts Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds play a game and chooses where random free agents would fit. Last Wednesday, Harold Reynolds decided to send James Paxton and Trevor Bauer to the Los Angeles Angels. That pair would do great in Los Angeles.
Vasgersian took it one step further and sent Trevor Bauer to Arlington. That’s right, Bauer would be the pitcher to help christen Globe Life Field and be a pitcher for the Rangers to build around. Trevor Bauer would absolutely make the Texas Rangers a better ballclub, and any club better for that matter.
The Rangers do not have the money to pay the price that Bauer is seeking. However, you can’t count out the Texas Rangers, based on Bauer’s social media presence anything can happen. The Rangers front office would love to have a star pitcher like Trevor Bauer.
Rangers need to pass and focus on signing shortstop
While Bauer would be a great sign, they need to look what they really need, specifically at the shortstop position and possibly sign Trevor Story next season. Next off-season boasts an incredible group of aging pitchers including Zack Greinke, Justin Verlander, Lance McCullers and Clayton Kershaw, among others.
If Texas seeks to contend in 2023, they should spend big next year and build around a combination of Story and McCullers, for example.
So while it might be fun to speculate Bauer donning “Rangers” across his chest this season, he simply isn’t the right fit for the current ballclub.
