Rangers GM Chris Young spoke on MLB Network Radio and delved into the fine details on what roles Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor will have in 2021.
The offseason for the Rangers began with the surprising news that Kiner Falefa will be the team’s everyday shortstop. As the lineup began to solidify, it became clear that Nick Solak would get most of the playing time at second.
The Rangers have completely redone the infield, leaving Elvis Andrus and Rougned Odor without specific roles. GM Chris Young finally cleared that all up on MLB Network radio. Chris Young said Andrus will have the opportunity to earn the starting third base role. Last week Chris Woodward announced that the third base spot will be open and for the taking.
Odor will become a super-utility player. Chris Young says that Odor could end up all over the infield and sometimes in the outfield. I prefer seeing Odor playing a designated spot like shortstop or second base.
Odor spent his time in the minor league playing both positions but did land at third during the World Baseball Classic a few years ago. This is going to be a very interesting spring training to watch. Odor continues to dominate spring training games, leaving many to wonder if he can fit himself into the everyday lineup.
However, if he struggles early on, his job could vanish. Now we just sit back and wait to see how it all plays out when the Rangers report to Spring Training.
