Rangers Bring Back Spencer Patton On Minor League Deal

Spencer Patton

The Texas Rangers are continuing their family reunion just a day after bringing back Delino DeShields, with the return of right-hander Spencer Patton.

Spencer Patton found some success in Arlington

Patton first played in Arlington in 2014 and then 2015. He broke onto the scene in 2014 as a call-up, recording a 0.96 ERA over nine games and 9.1 innings pitched that year. Texas ended up sending him away to Chicago in 2016 and then later played in Japan.

From 2014 to 2016, Patton recorded a 6.26 ERA and struck out 23.7% of the hitters he faced and only walked 11.4 batters over 54.2 innings pitched. While he struggled in the league, he found success in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He continued working on his changeup in Japan.

Patton spent four seasons with the Yokohama BayStars recording a 3.68 ERA over 205.2 innings pitched. He also led the league in appearances with 57 in 2020. Patton drew serious interest from many ball clubs as well as NPB teams, before settling in Arlington with the Texas Rangers.

The path to the opening day roster is going to be tough

Patton has an opportunity at making the team’s Opening Day roster, after spending the past few seasons in Japan. With his return to the big leagues, he could have a few more strong seasons left in him if he can end up on the Opening Day roster.

Patton needs to stand out among the crowd, as the Rangers bullpen is full of many talented young pitchers. The path to make the opening day roster will be very difficult.

What is your take on Patton? Do you believe he can succeed with the Rangers? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section.
